Breeding Population Inventories and Measures of Recruitment

VII. The Future

C. Technological Advances

Technology in a number of fields, including electronics and remote sensing, is advancing at a rapid pace. In the future these technologies should be applied to problems in estimating waterfowl production and recruitment rate. The development of smaller radio transmitters and perhaps the ability to track waterfowl populations from satellites should furnish data that are needed for improving estimates of breeding population and recruitment. Previously we illustrated attempts to use the relation between habitat availability and waterfowl populations for predicting waterfowl numbers and recruitment. There have been recent rapid advances in the use of habitat data obtained from satellites for inventory of waterfowl habitat (Heyland 1975, Koeln et al. 1986). When appropriate predictive models are developed, these data should provide improved estimates of waterfowl breeding populations and recruitment rate.
