Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center

Duck Nest Success on Conservation Reserve Program
Land in the Prairie Pothole Region

Conclusions

This study shows that CRP fields can provide more secure nesting cover for upland-nesting ducks than WPAs. Larger ducks seemed to have especially high nest success in CRP fields. However, nest success and use of CRP fields varies greatly. Currently, CRP fields are abundant and of a wide variety of age classes and sizes. These characteristics make them well suited as study sites for research to determine the effects of cover area, distance to water, and cover age on duck nest success.
