Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge

Fairbanks, Alaska


Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge (1.6 million acres) comprises thousands of lakes, streams, ponds, and marshes. These extensive wetlands provide nesting habitat for hundreds of thousands of waterfowl such as white-fronted and Canada geese and shorebirds. Its land also includes forests (mostly black spruce) and upland habitat - home for other birds including pine siskin, Wilson's warbler, boreal chickadee, great horned owl, bald and golden eagles. The refuge lies about 150 miles north of Fairbanks in interior Alaska, straddling the Arctic Circle.

This checklist contains species of birds that can be observed on the refuge. This list is provisional; seasonal abundance of many species has not yet been determined.
