Opportunities to view the many birds at the Ponds will vary with season, time of day, location within the Ponds, and other conditions. Use the abbreviated codes to assist you in your viewing.
The letters next to the common name of the birds denotes additional information on where, when or how common a bird may be seen:
(A) - abundant: a species which is very numerous
(C) - common: likely to be seen or heard in suitable habitat
(O) - occasional: seen a few times during a season
(U) - uncommon: present, but not certain to be seen
(M) - migratory: seen in spring and fall, passing through
(R) - rarely seen
BREEDING/WINTERING STATUS
Also, the number by the birds' names denotes the probable breeding/wintering status:
(1) - Direct evidence of breeding (nest or dependent young)
(2) - Indirect or circumstantial evidence of breeding
(3) - Observed, no evidence of breeding (summered only)
(4) - Overwintering, regular sightings during winter period
(5) - Overwintering not documented, species observed at least once between
Dec. 15 and Feb. 15
(6) - Use ponds for food source only
