Thunder Basin National Grassland

small state map showing location

Douglas, Wyoming

The Thunder Basin National Grassland, located in east-central Wyoming, hosts a great diversity of birds in all seasons. Many habitats can be found here including ponderosa pine woodland in the Rochelle Hills; scoria outcrops, sagebrush-steppe, grassland and numerous small wetlands and riparian areas. Irrigated and non-irrigated agriculture, prairie dog towns and reclaimed coal mines add to the habitat diversity of the Thunder Basin National Grassland. Over 200 species of birds can be seen- some are yearlong residents, others stay only for breeding or briefly appear during spring or fall migrations. Provision of habitat for all forms of wildlife is an important component of National Grassland ecosystem management to preserve the heritage of biodiversity found on the Great Plains. Additions to this list are welcome. This list was prepared by the Douglass Ranger District Ecologist, Judy von Ahlefeldt; Wildlife Biologist, Tim Byer and Patrick McLaughlin.

Common names from the Wyoming Bird Checklist (Wyoming Game and Fish Department). Other sources: Management Opportunities for Creating Wildlife Habitat through Surface Mines, Thunder Basin National Grassland by W.H. Blunt (1980) and the 1992 List of Migrants, Partners in Flight Newsletter Vol. 2 No. 1.
