Platte River Valley and Rainwater Basin

small state map showing location

Nebraska

In the heart of the Central Flyway lies a broad, braided river—the Platte—and a region of scattered wetlands known collectively as the Rainwater Basin. It is here that the hourglass shaped flyway narrows, funneling millions of cranes, waterfowl, shorebirds, and other species from throughout the Western Hemisphere into the Platte River valley and Rainwater Basin. Few wildlife spectacles rival the spring migration of Sandhill Cranes through the Platte valley, and nowhere else in the world do cranes of any species congregate in the numbers that occur here in Nebraska. In late February, the cranes and huge flocks of waterfowl begin to arrive, their numbers building weekly until their departure by early April. Nearly 500,000 cranes and over 10 million ducks and geese stage here, building up vital fat reserves which will fuel them to their Arctic nesting grounds as far away as northern Canada, Alaska, and Siberia.

Certainly cranes and waterfowl are the most conspicuous feathered inhabitants of the area; however, they comprise less than 10% of the 300+ species found here. Six federally endangered/threatened species occur here as well. They are the Bald Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Whooping Crane, Piping Plover, Eskimo Curlew, and Least Tern.

About 75% of the species found in Nebraska occur here. Over half of the 300 species listed are neotropical migrants; species with populations that winter largely south of the Tropic of Cancer but nest north of the tropics. Recent declines in this group of birds has focused much attention on conservation efforts in North America and Latin America. A total of 115 species nest in this area. We often think of spring and fall as the period for bird migration, but migration through Nebraska occurs in every month of the year, although January can be slow at times.

The "Observability" code is a subjective ranking of your chances of seeing a particular species. This ranking assumes that you are searching the proper habitat at the right time of the year. Perhaps you will be lucky enough to spot a new month for a certain species or, better yet, you may discover an entirely new species.

Names according to American Ornithologists' Union, 1993, 39th supplement to the A.O.U. Checklist of North American Birds (Auk 110:675-682 and previous revisions).

# - neotropical migrant
* - nests in the area

O - Observability Code:
1 - easy
