Birds of Northeastern Wyoming

small state map showing location

Casper, Wyoming

Map of Wyoming showing counties included in the Casper District   This checklist includes all of Northeast Wyoming within the Casper District. This area includes Sheridan, Johnson, Campbell, Crook, Weston, Niobrara, Natrona, Converse, Platte, and Goshen counties. This area is bounded by the Big Horn Mountains on the west, the Montana border on the north, the Black Hills, South Dakota and Nebraska on the east, and the North Platte River, and the Medicine Bow Mountains on the south. Diverse and scenic mountain uplifts, badlands, and rolling grasslands/sagebrush vistas form some of the most distinctive features in the area.

The region's is characterized by gently rolling short-grass prairie, interspersed with pockets of lodgepole pine/Douglas fir, ponderosa pine/limber pine and juniper woodlands. Among the grassland communities are areas of sagebrush, curlleaf mountain mahogany, true mountain mahogany, and other brushy habitats. Upland drainages, or woody draws provide stringers of deciduous woodlands dominated by cottonwood and aspen. River bottom forests along the North Platte, Powder River, Cheyenne River, and Little Missouri are dominated by cottonwood. An extremely diverse complex of habitat types provides an abundance of habitats for year-round residents, summer residents, and neotropical migratory birds.

Seasonal Status

R - Species that inhabit the District yearlong.
S - Species that inhabit the District during the summer and migrate out of the state during the winter.
M - Species found in the District only during the spring and/or fall migration.
W - Species inhabiting the District during the winter, but absent during the summer.
A - A species with accidental occurrence. Their normal range does not include the District.

Population Status

Populations of many species of birds are declining. Those with special conservation needs are identified as follows:

E - Federally listed Endangered species in Wyoming.
T - Federally listed Threatened species in Wyoming.
C - Federally listed as a Candidate species for listing as Threatened or Endangered somewhere in its range.
S - A species of special concern in Wyoming.
N - Neotropical migrant. Land birds that winter primarily in tropical America and are increasingly impacted by destruction of those habitats.

Abundance

The following terms apply to the abundance of individuals in suitable habitat.

7 - Abundant: occurs in large numbers and is easily observed because of its habitat and conspicuousness.
6 - Common: occurs in large numbers.
5 - Uncommon: occurs in low numbers.
4 - Rare: occurs yearly somewhere in the District, but in low numbers.
3 - Peripheral: a species whose range extends only into a small portion of the District.
2 - Extirpated: no longer occurs in the District, but did historically.
1 - Undetermind: a species whose existance within the District is verified but not adequately documented.
0 - Abundance depends on artificial propogation and stocking.

Seasons*

Spring Migration: 1 March - 31 May
Summer Nesting: 1 June - 31 July
