Madison Wetland Management District

Madison, South Dakota


The Madison Wetland Management District consists of a nine-county area of eastern South Dakota (the counties of Brookings, Deuel, Hamlin, Kingsbury, Lake, McCook, Miner, Minehaha, and Moody). Habitat types present in the district include fresh-water marshes, lakes, alkali ponds, upland grasslands, cropland, and open deciduous woodlands. The district is especially productive for the birdwatcher who enjoys water-oriented species such as herons, ducks, rails, shorebirds, and gulls.


This list of 297 species is in accordance with the sixth A.O.U. Checklist (1983). Symbols used in the list are as follows:
