BIRDWATCHING AT KIRWIN NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge is located in North-Central Kansas and contains 10,778 acres of grasslands, shelterbelts, riparian area, croplands, and open water. Roads and trails provide excellent opportunities for birding. The largest waterfowl populations usually occur in early March during spring migration. Spring and fall are good times for shorebird and songbird viewing, as well as waterfowl. Due to Kirwin National Wildlife Refuge's central location, both eastern and western species of birds overlap.
