This checklist contains the names of 280 species of birds observed within Grand Forks County in the past 25 years. Nomenclature follows that of the Fifth Edition, A.O.U. Check-list of North American Birds, as amended.

Ninety-four species known definitely to have nested within the county are indicated with an asterisk (*). An additional 26 species inferred to have nested , based on such evidence as repeated observations of territorial males or adults carrying food, are indicated by a plus (+).

Seasons and definitions of abundance are:

Sp - March 15 - May 31
Su - June 1 - July 31
F - Aug. 1 - Nov. 15
W - Nov. 15 - Mar. 15

A - Abundant: Daily counts exceedig 250 not unusual
C - Common: Daily counts of 25-250 not unusual
F - Fairly Common: Daily counts of 5-25 not unusual
U - Uncommon: Daily counts of 1-5, seasonal counts 5-25
R - Rare: Seen in most years, but usually less than 5/season
I - Irregular: Absent in some years, fairly common to abundant in others
O - Occasional: Not unexpected, but less than 5 records/decade
X - Accidental: Presence very unexpected, one or two records

Seasonal abundances are based on peak counts recorded during the past five years. For a given species, observations of the numbers indicated will generally require visits to the best available habitat at the time of peak occurrence in that season. For many species, optimal habitat is scarce, migratory periods are brief, and peak abundances vary from year to year. Peak abundances in summer and/or winter are also indicated for those migratory species which occur in those seasons, even if for only a few days. Examples include shorebirds, flycatchers, thrushes and warblers whose spring migrations contine into June, and shorebirds whose fall (southward) migration is well underway by July 1. Finally, abundances listed are perceived abundances. For the less conspicuous species, the abundances listed may substantially underestimate their actual numbers.

Details regarding observations of birds may be submitted to the Grand Forks Audubon Society, Box 23, Grand Forks, ND 58201.
