Hill Air Force Base
Utah

Hill Air Force Base, Utah

Hill AFB began operations in 1940 as a materiel base and depot and to provide repair and maintenance services for fighters and bombers during WWII. Now staffed by 21,000 military and civilian personnel, Hill AFB is home of the 388th Fighter Wing, one of the most decorated combat-ready units in AF history, and the 419th Fighter Wing, the 1st reserve F-16 wing. We provide expert maintenance of munitions, rocket motors, aircraft landing gear and software, photographic reconnaissance equipment and the nation's ICBM inventory. Through the Ogden Air Force Logistics Center, we provide worldwide engineering and logistics management for the F-16 Fighting Falcon - the worlds largest fleet of fighter aircraft. Hill AFB, situated on and ancient delta of Lake Bonneville, is located just east of the Great Salt Lake between the urban areas of Ogden and Salt Lake City.

The Natural Resource Management Office oversees the 6,698 acres of Hill AFB and 960,000 acres of the Utah Test and Training Range. The range area, situated west of the Great Salt Lake, is high desert basin and range habitat with seasonal (Spring) wetland playas and settlement basins. Hill AFB habitats are developed cantonment area, housing, golf course, ponds, a small woods and the airfield. Natural Resource Office activities include Bird Air Strike Hazard (BASH), risk assessment, urban forestry, wetlands management, and threatened and endangered species management.

Air Force Resource Management

The United States Air Force has the responsibility of managing more than nine million acres of valuable public lands. To ensure success, the Air Force has developed a network of dedicated professionals who work in coordination with local, regional and national authorities. Their challenge is to find a balance in requirements for military mission, security and environmental habitat protection. This effort requires the cooperation and support of the Air Force and its neighbors. The primary goal is to guarantee the quality of public lands under Air Force stewardship.

Conservation programs on Air Force bases include fish and wildlife conservation, forestry, agricultural land lease, habitat management and outdoor recreation, Air Force resource Managers and nearby communities, working together, have made great strides in fostering environmental awareness through education and cooperation.

The Air Force supports partnerships with many resource groups; Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation, Ducks Unlimited, North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Wetlands Protection and Enhancement and the National Watchable Wildlife program. You are invited to visit Air Force lands. Come see how we are doing with our part of America.

The Department of Defense and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation are cooperating on an international program to promote conservation of neotropical migratory birds. For information, call DoD Legacy Office at (703) 604-1773 or NFWF at (202) 857-0166.
