Fort Riley, Kansas

Fort Riley, Kansas

Fort Riley, established in 1853 as an outpost to protect the Santa Fe and Oregon Trails, has been Headquarters of the Big Red One, the Army's First Mechanized Infantry Division. Its location in the Kansas River Valley in the northern Flint Hills provides unobstructed open space for training and maneuvers. Fort Riley's 101,000 acres serve as training grounds for armor and infantry.

Fort Riley's open range is one of the country's largest remaining areas of Tallgrass Prairie. Resource management sponsors prescribed burns to restrict undesirable plants. The Natural Resource Office manages the grasslands, riparian wooded areas along seven major drainages and more than 25 stocked fishing ponds. A Nature Trail has been established at the First Territorial Capitol near where the Republican and Smoky Hill Rivers join to become the Kansas River. Deer, a free-ranging elk herd and over 200 species of birds are found throughout the varied habitat.

The military mission precludes open access to much of Fort Riley at certain times. For information contact Natural Resources Office; 913-239-6211

Department of Defense Legacy Program

The Department of Defense manages more than 25 million acres worldwide. Much of this land is located in sensitive wetlands along valuable shorelines, some of the most ecologically significant in the world. The location of these real estate holdings makes it imperative that the various military missions are planned and executed in harmony with the environment.

The Department of Defense supports numerous partnerships with the other Federal, State, local and private resource groups to promote such programs as the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation, Wetlands Protection and Enhancement , and Watchable Wildlife.

To succeed in its mission, and to earn public confidence, DoD must emphasize natural resources stewardship in every aspect of its land use. It does. Come see for yourself and discover our resources.

The Department of the Army and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation are cooperating on an international program to promote conservation of neotropical migratory birds. For information, call DoD at (703) 604-6735 or NFWF at (202) 857-0166
