Fort Leavenworth, Kansas

Fort Leavenworth, Kansas

Fort Leavenworth's mission is Officer education. The Fort instructs officers in the ranks of Captain through General. The school's influence is international; foreign Officers from many nations participate.

Fort Leavenworth has an historical link with natural resources exploration and new bird species discovery. The military-sponsored Lewis and Clark expedition, came through what is now Fort Leavenworth early in their journey. Established in 1827, Fort Leavenworth was the first fort west of the Missouri River, and is the oldest settlement in Kansas. Both the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails crossed the river and passed through the Fort.

The Natural/Cultural resources Office manages 5600 acres of upland bluffs and river bottom. Weston Bend contains the only remnant native riparian habitat along the Missouri River, with forest over 200 years old. This forest provides prime habitat for wildlife. Birds migrating between the US and tropical climates rely on the area for nesting or migration stopover.

The Resource Office goal is to insure that Officers are knowledgeable about natural and cultural resources management. Specific course requirements may include identification by sight and call of 50 bird species. Studies involve making sound recordings of the songs in the field. The Army manages millions of acres worldwide. It is essential that Command Officers acquire basic understanding of land management parameters, and develop a personal concern for America's natural heritage.

Department of Defense Legacy Program

The Department of Defense manages more than 25 million acres worldwide. Much of this land is located in sensitive wetlands and along riverbanks, some of the most ecologically significant areas in the world. The location of these real estate holdings makes it imperative that the various military missions are planned and executed in harmony with the environment.

The Department of Defense supports numerous partnerships with other Federal, State, local and private resource groups to promote such programs as the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation, Wetland Protection and Enhancement, and Watchable Wildlife.

To succeed in its mission, and to earn public confidence, DoD must emphasize natural resources stewardship in every aspect of its land use. It does. Come see for yourself and discover our resources.

The U.S. Army and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation are cooperating on an international program to promote conservation of neotropical migratory birds. For information, call DoD at (703) 604-6735 or NFWF at (202) 857-0166.
