Bismarck-Mandan Area

Bismarck, North Dakota


This checklist contains names of birds found in an area approximately 100 miles in diameter centered on Bismarck-Mandan in south central North Dakota. The area includes the Cross Ranch, Fort Lincoln State Park, Long Lake National Wildlife Refuge, and many natural wetlands in the northeastern and eastern portions of the area. It also includes the upper end of Oahe Reservoir and most of the natural river bottom habitat which remains along the Missouri River in the State.

Nomenclature follows that of the Sixth Edition, A.O.U. Checklist of North American Birds. New names are used, but old English names of subspecies identifiable in the field are included. Species nesting within the area are inducated with an asterisk "*". Seasonal occurrence is indicated by a relative abundance symbol under each of the seasonal columns.
