Westover Air Reserve Base
Massachusetts

Westover Air Reserve Base

Established in 1940 as the "Northeast Airbase," the site served as an attack base, then became a bomber crew training site for the remainder of WWII. Designated as Eastern HQ for the Military Transport Service after the war, Westover was hub for the Berlin airlift. Now home to the 439th Airlift Wing, the primary mission at Westover ARB is to fly the United States' largest aircraft, the C5A Galaxy. As the nation's largest Air Force Reserve center, the base serves as a refueling and maintenance site for military aircraft to and from Europe.

Located within the communities of Chicopee and Ludlow, Westover lies on an ancient glacial sand-based outwash delta. It is part of the Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge, which covers the entire Connecticut River Valley. A large wetland complex created by Stoney Brook and Wade Lake covers the Northeastern part of the base. Grasslands, pine plantations, forested wetlands, sedge meadows and cranberry bogs provide varied habitat. Westover contains the largest contiguous grassland in the Northeast, 1600 acres of the 2600 acre installation.

The Environmental Engineering Office manages the grasslands with prescribed mowing and activity schedules. Field cards are provided for units training on site, to alert them to environmental considerations. Birding field trips are held, trails established, and a Bluebird nest box project is underway. Massachusetts Audubon and state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife intensively monitor unique populations of Upland Sandpiper and Grasshopper Sparrow. Westover has received the AF Reserve Command, General Thomas D. White Award for excellence in natural resource management several years in a row. Base conservation tours can be arranged through the base Public Affairs Office. For information, contact 413-557-3500.

Air Force Resource Management

The United States Air Force has the responsibility of managing more than nine million acres of valuable public lands. To ensure success, the Air Force has developed a network of dedicated professionals who work in coordination with local, regional and national authorities. Their challange is to find a balance in requirements for military mission, security and evironmental habitat protection. This effort requires the cooperation and support of the Air Force and its neighbors. The primary goal is to guarantee the quality of public lands under Air Force Stewardship.

Conservation programs on Air Force Bases include fish and wildlife conservation, forestry, agricultural land lease, habitat management and outdoor recreation. Air Force Resource Managers and nearby communities, working together, have made great strides in fostering environmental awareness through education and cooperation.

The Air Force supports partnerships with many resource groups; Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation, Ducks Unlimited, North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Wetlands Protection and Enhancement and the National Watchable Wildlife program. You are invited to visit Air Force lands. Come see how we are doing with our part of America.
