Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge

Sussex, New Jersey
The Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge plans to open several wildlife observation trails and a fishing area during 1997. Trails will be along portions of an abandoned railroad bed that traverses the Refuge and fishing will be allowed at Bassetts Bridge.
It has taken several years to complete the necessary documentation to open parts of the Refuge to public uses such as hiking and fishing. The Refuge Manager, Elizabeth Herland, is in the final stages of the process right now. Public uses of the Refuge must be compatible with the purposes for which the Refuge was established, and must be wildlife oriented.
Other wildlife observation areas will be opened in the future. If you are planning to visit the Refuge, please call the Refuge Office at 201-702-7266 to find out which areas are open and what uses are permitted.
