NEW BOSTON AIR STATION

Established in 1942 as Grenier Field Bombing Range, New Boston Air Station (NBAS) is now an Air Force satellite tracking station under Air Force Space Command. Code named "BOSS", NBAS is one of 14 worldwide command and control stations which constitute the Air Force Satellite Control Network. NBAS provides launch, operation and on-orbit support of DoD Satellites, support for NASA's space shuttle and for NATO and allied satellites.

New Boston lies 12 miles west of Manchester, New Hampshire, in a hilly area of former farmland. Its 2,826 acres is a mixed hardwood and white pine habitat with numerous streams and ponds. The largest is the 43 acre Joe English Pond. Sparse and dense forests, open fields and old meadows, wetlands and open water provide extensive habitats for Spring and Fall migrant birds as well as numerous breeding species. A rocky, south-facing cliff on Joe English Hill creates a unique wilderness area.

Natural resource management has undertaken an extensive biological survey that encompasses habitats, plants, butterflies, mussels, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The results provide data enabling development of comprehensive management practices affecting all elements of the landscape. For information, contact 603-471-2426.

AIR FORCE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

The United State Air Force has the responsibility of managing more than nine million acres of valuable public lands. To ensure success, the Air Force has developed a network of dedicated professionals who work in coordination with local, regional and national authorities. Their challenge is to find a balance in requirements for military mission, security and environmental habitat protection. This effort requires the cooperation and support of the Air Force and its neighbors. The primary goal is to guarantee the quality of public lands under Air Force stewardship.

Conservation programs on Air Force bases include fish and wildlife conservation, forestry, agricultural land lease, habitat management and outdoor recreation. Air Force Resource Managers and nearby communities, working together, have made great strides in fostering environmental awareness through education and cooperation.

The Air Force supports partnerships with many resource groups; Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation, Ducks Unlimited, North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Wetlands Protection and Enhancement and the National Watchable Wildlife program. You are invited to visit Air Force lands. Come see how we are doing with our part of America.

The U.S. Air Force and Partners in Flight are cooperating on an international program to promote conservation of Neotropical migratory birds. For information, visit http://www.dodpif.org, or call Department of Defense Partners in Flight at 540-253-5675.
