Lakehurst, New Jersey

LAKEHURST NAES, NEW JERSEY

The military presence in this area began in 1915 when Eddystone Arsenal conducted chemical weapons testing for the Russian Imperial Army during World War I. The U.S. Army took over in 1918 with the establishment of Camp Kendrick for gas warfare training. The Navy took control of the land in 1921 with the opening of the Naval Air Station Lakehurst. It was an international center of "Lighter-than-Air" operations for 40 years. Now the mission of Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst is Aircraft Platform Interface; the engineering and testing of launching catapults, guidance systems and recovery arresting gear that allow aircraft to operate aboard ships. New systems and techniques are researched, developed, analyzed and designed to find safer, more effective and more energy efficient operations.

NAES Lakehurst covers 7,430 acres in the northeast portion of the one million acre Pinelands National Reserve in central New Jersey, ten miles inland from the Atlantic coast. Installation natural resources include 4100 acres of forest, 1020 acres of wetlands, 71 acres of lakes, 15 small fireponds and 2550 acres of grasslands. this landscape mosaic provides excellent habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. Of the grasslands, 1800 acres are actively managed to benefit grassland bird species. Invasive tree removal, winter mowing and selective prescribed burns are use to improve habitat. Many grassland bird species from the NJ Threatened and Endangered species list are found on NAES. Upland Sandpipers (E) breed here along with large numbers of Grasshopper Sparrows (T), Vesper Sparrow (E) and Henslow's Sparrow (E) have all been sighted on NAES during the breeding season. For further information, contact John Joyce, NAES Natural Resources Manager, at (732) 323-2911.

NAVY RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

The Navy manages more than four million acres worldwide. Much of this land is located in sensitive wetlands along valuable coastlines, some of the most ecologically significant areas in the world. The location of our real estate holdings makes it imperative that we plan and execute our various military missions in harmony with our environment. It is a Department of the Navy goal to promote an environmental protection ethic within the Navy workforce.

The Department of the Navy supports numerous partnerships with other Federal, State, local and private resource groups to promote such programs as the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation, Wetlands protection and Enhancement and Watchable wildlife.

To succeed in our mission, and to earn public confidence, the Navy must emphasize natural resource stewardship in every aspect of its land use. Training and testing areas can provide valuable habitat. Come and discover our resources.

The Navy and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation are cooperating on an international program to promote conservation of Neotropical migratory birds. For information, call DoD Legacy Office at (703) 604-1773 or NFWF at (202) 857-0166.
