Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
DeLeon Springs, Florida
The refuge is an important area in a section of the country that has seen rapid growth and development over the years. Much of the refuge is accessible only by boat and most of the refuge birders use the manmade dikes that form the pools. These dikes were built through the marsh and lead to Jones Island. The pools attract waterfowl and marsh birds throughout thc year, but especially in the winter months. Other trails, roads and firebreaks are also open for birding on a year-round basis and can be equally rewarding.
Good luck! Your visit today can be the beginning or the extension of a very satisfying learning experience. We sincerely hope your adventures are successful and rewarding. The following checklist includes 212 species plus accidentals.
