Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge

small state map showing location

Slidell, Louisiana

Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge is one of over 500 national wildlife refuges. The refuge is located entirely within the corporate limits of New Orleans in Orleans Parish, Lousiana and encompasses approximately 22,770 acres. The primary objectives of Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge are to provide habitat for the protection of fish and wildlife and to provide opportunites for fish and wildlife-oriented public use and recreation.

Opportunities for bird watching abound on the refuge. A mix of habitats including hardwood forest, scrub/shrub, fresh marsh and tidal marsh create the opportunity to observe a broad variety of bird species within a small geographical area. Neotropical migrants abound during the fall and spring migrations and many species nest on the refuge. Shorebirds are present year round and the refuge supports a wading bird rookery which may contain over 5,000 nesting pairs. Each winter thousands of waterfowl make their home on the refuge and mottled ducks are common summer nesters.

The following bird list contains 268 species, representing observations by refuge personnel and refuge volunteers. Other species have been observed in adjacent areas but have not been observed on the refuge.

Common names and sequencing are from the American Ornithologist's Union Checklist of North American Birds. 6th Edition, 1985, and Supplement of July, 1985.
