Bird Checklists of the United States

Ace Basin National Wildlife Refuge

small state map showing location

Hollywood, South Carolina

This checklist includes all avian species which regularly occur in the 350,000 acres that constitute the Ace Basin, the lower drainage of the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto Rivers. Species considered extremely rare, accidental, or for which there exist no known records have been omitted. Relative status and seasonality may vary from year to year for some species.

Much of the area in the ACE Basin is privately owned and cannot be entered without permission from property owners. Public lands such as Donnelley Wildlife Management Area (WMA), Bear Island WMA, the ACE Basin National Estuarine Research Reserve and the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge are open to the pubic during certain days and seasons. Birders should check with state or federal wildlife officials before visiting these areas.

Donnelley WMA, Bear Island WMA and the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge contain upland habitats, and managed freshwater and brackish impoundments. The National Estuarine Research Reserve consists mainly of salt marsh, mud flats, barrier beaches and open water.

The ACE Basin Project is a cooperative effort among landowners and private and public conservation agencies to protect important habitats in the watershed of the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto (ACE) rivers including St. Helena estuary and sound.

The project area, identified as one of the highest priority regions for protection under North American Waterfowl Management Plan, encompasses 350,000 acres of marsh, swamp and upland in Beaufort, Charleston, Colleton and Hampton counties.

Administered by the ACE Basin Task Force (Private landowners, Ducks Unilmitad, S.C. Wildlife and Marine Resources Department, The Nature Conservancy and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), the project has protected over 100,000 acres of diverse upland and wetland habitats.
