Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge

Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge encompasses 5,617 acres of diverse habitat that serves as a resting and breeding ground for migratory birds and other wildlife. Part of the Mississippi Flyway, some 251 species of birds have been observed on the refuge's marsh, prairies, or bottomland hardwoods. While spring and fall provide peak opportunities to observe birds, there are many species to be found year-round.

Refuge personnel and visiting ornithologists have contributed to this bird list. This bird list is in accordance with the Sixth American Ornithologists' Union Checklist of North American birds as amended.


Season, abundance and nesting status for each bird's suitable habitat are coded as follows:
* - nests on the refuge

Sp - March-May
S - June-August
F - September-November
W - December-February

c - common: certain to be seen in suitable habitat
u - uncommon: present but not certain to be seen
o - occasional: seen only a few times during season
r - rare: seen at intervals of 2 to 5 years
