Birds and the Hopewell

Representatives of birds appear in many forms on Hopewell artifacts. They may be seen as platform pipes, copper headdresses, and mica cutouts. The birds depicted were those native to the river valleys where the Hopewell lived: Great Blue Heron, Raven, Peregrine Falcon, Turkey Vulture, Ducks, Prairie Chicken, Owls, Carolina Parakeet, and Eagles.

While we cannot know exactly what the birds meant to the Hopewell, archaeologists infer the importance of bird representatiions from the materials the replications were made of (e.g. mica, copper, pipestone), and the context in which they were found (e.g. burials). Many archaeologists also look to modern Native peoples to determine the importance of birds. For instance, to some American Indians, the eagle is a symbol of power and the hawk is a messenger.
