Abundance is relative to the habitat of the species and not to the area as a whole. Generally, an abundant species may be seen more than 75% of the time in the proper habitat at the right time of the year; a common species more than 50% of the time; an uncommon species between 10% and 50% of the time; and a rare species 10% of the time or less. The accidental species has single records or a very small number of scattered records without an established pattern of occurrence.
