Bird Checklists of the United States

Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area

Brecksville, Ohio

Established in 1974, the Cuyahoga Valley NRA comprises 32,000 acres of forests, fields, farmlands and a variety of wetlands. This diversity of habitats makes the park one of the most outstanding places in the State of Ohio for birdwatching. Over the years 231 species have been recorded within park boundaries. It seems likely that the list will grow even larger as habitats change, and as more and more birders explore the park's nooks and crannies, in all seasons. Ecologically the park is very dynamic. In a process known as succession, fields are reverting to forests and wetlands to meadows while new wetlands are being "created" by beaver that have returned to the valley. These changes will, no doubt, affect bird populations.

This checklist is designed to encourage birders to report unusual sightings. Of the 231 species included, 109 are noteworthy and marked with * or + symbols. The information provided through reliable sightings will prove useful in tracking changes in species and migration patterns.

While birdwatching is one way to enjoy the world of nature, it should also lead to an elevated concern for conservation and preservation of the environment. Birders should always place the needs of wildlife before their own interests of observation. This is especially true during the nesting season when any disturbance could imperil nesting success.

We hope that this list will assist you in enjoying the park's birdlife and that it will encourage you to get out and explore the many habitats of the Cuyahoga Valley NRA throughout the year.

All names follow the taxonomy as listed in the 6th Edition of the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) Checklist of North American Birds, 1983.
