This checklist contains 290 species of birds that have been reported in Cook County Forest Preserves and surrounding areas. Please report sightings of any species listed as rare or accidental, or a species which has not been included in the list. For current information about bird observations within the Cook County Forest Preseves, check at your local nature center. Good Birding!

Symbols indicating abundance and seasonal distribution in the species preferred habitat are:

P - Permanent resident
M - Migrant spring and/or fall
S - Summer resident
W - Winter visitor
A - Abundant - certain to be found in good numbers in several habitat.
C - Common - likely to be found in good numbers in suitable habitat.
U - Uncommon - possible to be found in small numbers in suitable habitat.
R - Rare - unlikely to be found even in suitable habitat.
X - Accidental - out of its normal range.
* - Nesting - known to nest in the area.
