Bureau of Land Management Yuma Field Office
The Yuma Field Office manages 1.6 million acres of public land in Arizona and California. Habitats vary from aquatic river, lake, and marsh environments to terrestrial uplands with broad sandy plains, rocky foothills, and desert mountain peaks. Vegetation ranges form wetland and riparian species such as cattail, willow, and cottonwood, to desert plants like creosotebush, palo verde, and giant saguaro cactus.
This checklist contains the names of 269 (check this number!) species that occur within the area. Bird names are according to the 41st supplement to the American Ornithologists' Union Checklist of North American Birds. The abundance and residency codes given are general and should only be used as guides. Species abundance may vary yearly or seasonally. Habitats also determine where a species will be found and how numerous it may be.
The checklist will be periodically updated, so notification of interesting sightings would be greatly appreciated. Sightings of birds not contained in this checklist or those categorized as rare or accidental should be documented by photographs or complete details. Please report them to:
C - Common or abundant - Generally seen in suitable habitat, sometimes
in large numbers. Includes the terms "fairly common" and "not uncommon".
U - Uncommon - Seldom or infrequently seen, though not unusual.
R - Rare - Low probability of being seen, but not out of its usual
range.
Residency
y - Yearlong - Found in the area all year.
s - Summer - Resident during summer. This category includes the period
of migration to and from this area.
w - Winter - Resident during winter. Includes the period of migration
to and from this area.
t - Transient or migrant - Spring or fall migrant; summer of winter
visitor.
