National Wildlife Refuges

Douglas, Arizona


San Bernardino NWR is located along the United States/Mexico border east of Douglas, Arizona in Cochise County. The 2,309 acre refuge provides protection to endangered native fishes. Leslie Canyon NWR is located approximately 15 miles north of Douglas, Arizona in southeast Arizona. The 1,240 acres of upland, riparian and aquatic habitat is located on the Swisshelm Mountains, also in Cochise County.

San Bernardino Refuge has recorded 231 species of birds that have been seen on the refuge. Species are listed in accordance with the Sixth Edition of the A.O.U. Check-list as amended (1983). Accepted new names are used.

M - Migrant: migrates through, or wanderer from nearby areas; may be seen at various times of the year.

a - abundant: a common species that is very numerous
c - common: certain to be seen in suitable habitat
r - rare: seen at intervals of 2 to 5 years
x - accidental: has been seen only once or twice
