The Safford District

The Safford District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) administers 1,346,322 acres of Public Land in Cochise, Graham, Greenlee, Gila, Pima, and Pinal counties of southeastern Arizona and 121,275 acres of Public Land in Grant and Hidalgo counties of southwestern New Mexico. The BLM is charged with the responsibility of managing the wildlife habitat which occurs on your Public Lands. This is no easy task when one considers that the needs of wildlife must be balanced with the other uses of the Public Lands, such as livestock grazing, mining, woodland products, wilderness preservation and recreation.

The diverse faunal and floral communities within the Safford District result from the junction of the Rocky Mountains, Sierra Madre Mountains, Sonoran Desert and Chihuahuan Desert complexes. Desert birds, northern birds and birds of Mexican affinity all occur within this southeastern Arizona area. The key to protecting and maintaining this diverse assemblage of birds and other animals in the Safford District is through management of the diverse habitat types they occupy.

We hope this wildlife species list will increase your appreciation and enjoyment of the Safford District and its wildlife. Please remember these Public Lands are yours to enjoy and preserve for the future.

This checklist has been prepared to include all the lands (BLM, U.S. Forest Service, other Federal agencies, State and Private Lands) which occur within the boundaries of the Safford District. Information for this checklist was compiled by Wildlife Biologists of the Safford District of the BLM from published literature, the Arizona Natural Heritage Program, and field observations. This list was reviewed for accuracy by Wildlife Biologists from the U.S. Forest Service and Arizona Game and Fish Department, Dr. Scott Mills and Terry Johnson of the Arizona Natural Heritage Program, and field observations. This list was reviewed for accuracy by Wildlife Biologists from the U.S. Forest Service and Arizona Game and Fish Department, Dr. Scott Mills and Terry Johnson of the Arizona Natural Heritage Program, and Dr. William Davis. This list will be periodically updated so the reporting of any unusual sightings would be gratefully appreciated.

Using This List

This checklist contains columns after each species which describe:

  1. That species' abundance relative to similar species based on frequency of observation, not density.
    ABUNDANCE
    C = Common
    U = Uncommon
    R = Rare
    L = Local
    I = Irregular (presence varies from year to year)

  2. Residency or the particular season in which that species may most commonly be observed.
    RESIDENCY
    P = Permanent Resident
    S = Summer Resident
    W = Winter Resident
    T = Transient (includes vagrants any time of year, including non-breeding summer visitors)

  3. The habitat type(s) in which a species may most often be found.
    HABITAT TYPE(S)
    RES = Residency
    RAG = Residential & Agricultural
    LM = Lakes, Marshes, etc.
    CDS = Chihuahuan Desertscrub
    SDS = Sonoran Desertscrub
    PDG = Plains & Desert Grasslands
    IC = Interior Chaparral
    LRF = Lowland Riparian Forest
    MRF = Montane Riparian Forest
    OOPW = Oak or Oak-Pine Woodland
    PJW = Pinyon-Juniper Woodland
