Bird Checklists of the United States

Padre Island National Seashore

small state map showing location

Corpus Christi, Texas

Padre Island National Seashore's location on the central flyway between North and South America makes it very important to the birds of this hemisphere. Its abundant wetlands provide freshwater, insects, and forage to thousands of migrating birds every year. Its grasslands, shores, and the surrounding waters provide important habitat for many species who winter here. The National Seashore also has the distinction of being designated a globally important bird area by the American Bird Conservancy. This checklist lists 326 species found on the island and provides the habitat where they are most likely to be found and their relative abundance during each season.

HABITAT

The following abbreviations designate the various habitats on the island:

B - Gulf Beach
L - Laguna Shore
S - Both Shores
P - Freshwater ponds
G - Grasslands
E - Entire Island

ABUNDANCE

Abundance is given for the main island. Some birds, that may not be common on the main island, may be common on small islands in the Laguna Madre, where they nest. Abundance may vary from that on the mainland for the same species at the same time and may vary from season to season because of shifts in migration patterns, weather patterns, or other reasons. The abbreviations used for abundance are:

C - Common: should be seen on average day
U - Uncommon: present, but may not be seen
R - Rare: seen only a few times per year
A - Accidental: out of normal range

MISCELLANEOUS

The following abbreviations indicate other items of interest:

* - Nests in the Seashore
+ - May nest in the Seashore
x - Found in greater abundance on the mainland
# - Abundance is from field guides or other checklists. May not be accurate for the seashore
I - Irregular: may be fairly common one year and absent the next.
