Bird Checklists of the United States

Southwest Oklahoma

small state map showing location

Oklahoma

This checklist, compiled by Janet and Louis McGee, includes birds seen in and reported from Greer, Harmon, Jackson, Kiowa, Tillman, Comanche and Cotton counties during the past 30 years. Very rare species have been omitted. The abundance of many species varies across southwestern Oklahoma, therefore the relative abundance codes are approximations for the entire region. For example, the red-bellied woodpecker, blue jay and tufted titmouse are more common in the eastern part of the region while the ladder-backed woodpecker and ash-throated flycatcher are more common in the west. The common names and their sequence follow the 6th edition of the American Ornithologists' Union Checklist of North American Birds.

For additional information on area species, see Jack D. Tyler's "Birds of Southwestern Oklahoma," Contributions from Stovall Museum, University of Oklahoma, Nos. 2 and 3, 1979.
