Bird Checklists of the United States

Shinnery Oak - Grasslands

small state map showing location

Oklahoma

The Shinnery Oak - Grasslands is a vegetation association largely unique to western Oklahoma and occurs most extensively in Beckham, Roger Mills and Ellis counties. This check-list includes birds reported in these three counties based upon several references including accumulated records of 20 years or more by Ina S. Brown (Beckham County), Rena Boss (Roger Mills County), and Kenneth Seyffert (Ellis County). Compiled by Kenneth Seyffert, the common and scientific names used in this list conform to the Sixth Edition of the American Ornithologists' Union Check-list of North American Birds (1983).

The compiler chose to include all reliable sightings, however rare and unusual, in order that the inquiring student and visitor may be made aware of the rich possibilities open to the alert observer. Observers are encouraged to participate in clarifying and rounding out still further the status of birds in this area.
