Bird Checklists of the United States

South-Central Oklahoma

Oklahoma

This checklist, compiled by William A. Carter, includes birds recorded from the region south of the Canadian River from southern Hughes, Coal, Johnston, and Marshall Counties westward through Grady, Stephens and Jefferson Counties. Although formerly covered by dense Post Oak-Blackjack Oak woodlands with scattered openings of tallgrass prairie, numerous stretches of rich bottomland forests and riparian woodlands, today only remnants of these habitats remain unchanged. Artificial reservoirs, from the sprawling Lake Texhoma, the smaller Lake Murray, Arbuckle Reservoir, and Lake Waurika, to the innumerable smaller lakes and ponds, provide open water and some marsh habitat. The juniper-oak covered Arbuckle Mountains with clear, spring-fed streams, especially the walking trails near the Nature Center of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area (formerly Platt National Park), always provide interesting birding.

A more comprehensive list is published by the Oklahoma Ornithological Society ($2.00 from O.O.S., P.O. Box 65, Ada, OK 74820), "OOS Date Guide to the Occurrences of Birds in Oklahoma, 1986."
