Bird Checklists of the United States

Oklahoma Ozarks

small state map showing location

Oklahoma

Most of the documented observations listed have been made in southern Delaware County near Spavinaw Creek, its tributaries, and the two Spavinaw Lake reservoirs. The rugged terrain is mostly wooded with brushy pastures and limited agriculture.

Approzimately 280 species have been recorded in this area, of which 226 have been selected for this list. Very rare species and stragglers have been omitted to avoid misleading the student and disappointing visitors. The accompanying keys indicate the seasons and habitat in which each species normally occurs. Dates defining the seasons vary from year to year: summer (S) does not always imply nesting, and winter (W) does not necessarily mean throughout the winter season.

Birds of the Oklahoma Ozarks was prepared by Frederick M. and A. Marguerite Baumgartner of the Little Lewis Whirlwind Nature School and Sanctuary, Inc. near Jay, Oklahoma; 1984.

A more inclusive list of Oklahoma species, "Check-list of Birds of Oklahoma," may be obtained from the Stovall Museum of Science and History, University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma 73019.
