Bird Checklists of the United States

Osage Hills and Tallgrass Prairie

small state map showing location

Oklahoma

The 266 species of birds on this checklist are as diverse as the richly varied habitat. Centered around Bartlesville and its Caney River bottoms, this list also includes the surrounding tallgrass prairie of Washington and Osage counties and the blackjack wooded slopes of the Osage hills. The waterfowl and shorebirds are frequently found at the area's four major lakes - Copan, Hulah, Birch and Bluestem.

Approximately 300 species have been recorded in this area, but the very rare sightings have been omitted to aviod misleading the student and disappointing visitors. This list was originally compiled in 1984 by Melinda Droege from the Bartlesville Audubon Society using records spanning a 20-year period and was updated in 1995.

The Loggerhead Shrike is a year-round resident often seen along area roadsides and open country. Commonly referred to as the "butcher-bird," the shrike impales its prey on thorns or barbed wire.

A more inclusive list of Oklahoma species, "Checklist of Birds of Oklahoma," may be obtained from the Stovall Museum of Science and History, University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK 73019.
