Bird Checklists of the United States

Oklahoma City Area

small state map showing location

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Although we are highly urbanized, the parks, lakes and other pockets of remaining "wilderness" are shelter and home for an exciting variety of birds. About four hundred species are "officially" recorded for Oklahoma of which 255 were selected for this list. Most of the very rare species are omitted to avoid misleading the student and disappointing visitors. The accompanying keys are a guide to usual habitat and season. The mid-summer return of some northerly nesting shorebirds is reflected in the Summer as well as Fall columns.

This list was prepared by John G. Newell in 1984 from 30 years' accumulated local records. This checklist is designed for use in Oklahoma, Cleveland, Canadian, Kingfisher, Logan, McClain, Pottawatomie and surrounding counties. Because the abundance of each species differs across its range, the abundances listed here are estimates for the region and may not be completely accurate for your area.

A more inclusive list of Oklahoma species, the checklist of Birds of Oklahoma, may be obtained from the Stovall Museum of Science and History, University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma 73019.
