Bird Checklists of the United States

Northwest Oklahoma

small state map showing location

Oklahoma

This checklist includes 272 of the 334 species reported in northwest Oklahoma outside the panhandle. Very rare species having few observation records have been omitted. The area includes the following 12 counties: Harper, Woods, Alfalfa, Grant, Ellis, Woodward, Major, Garfield, Dewey, Blaine, Roger Mills, and Custer. The predominant habitat type in northwest Oklahoma consists of fields or closely grazed grasslands. Important streams have some riparian woody growth, and a few canyons support sufficient woody vegetation to attract woodland birds.

The meadowlark is one of the most common birds occurring in the grasslands. Both eastern and western species nest in the area with the region being close to the center of range overlap between the species.
