Bird Checklists of the United States

Fort Gibson Reservoir area

small state map showing location

Oklahoma

Fort Gibson Reservoir is located on the Grand River just north of its confluence with the Arkansas River. It and surrounding environs include parts of Wagoner, Cherokee, Mayes and Muskogee Counties. With timbered bottomlands along the river below the dam, wooded hills and hollows on the east side of the lake, and rolling prairie grasslands on the west, the Fort Gibson Reservoir area attracts an interesting variety of birds throughout the year. The bald eagle is a winter visitant to the area that can frequently be seen in the vicinity of the reservoir dam. This list, compiled by James L. and Marion B. Norman of the Indian Nations Audubon Society (Muskogee/Tahlequah), is based on over thirty years of seasonal records, Christmas counts, and a ten-year study of some 1,100 specimens of 82 species killed during fall migration at a t.v. tower in the area. Very rare species have been omitted to avoid misleading the student and disappointing visitors.

A more inclusive list of Oklahoma species, "A Check-list of Oklahoma Birds", by George M. Sutton, may be obtained from the Stovall Museum of Science and History; University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma 73019.
