Habitat
Habitat is not listed for birds occurring throughout the monument.
B - Bottom of major canyons have permanent water flowing in sandy washes
flanked by terraces of desert shrub (sage and rabbit brush).
H - Heads of canyons are moist woodlands (aspen, douglas-fir, oak, box elder).
S - Slopes and cliffs are rocky and arid with only a few, well-adapted bird
species.
PJ - Pinyon and juniper dominate the mesa tops. Bird diversity is low but
several habitat - specific birds live here.
A - Air, generally seen flying.
Seasonal Abundance
Spring March-May; migration
Summer May-August; breeding
Fall August-October; migration
Winter November-March
A - Abundant; many present at right place and time.
C - Common; present at right place and time.
U - Uncommon; usually present in varying numbers at right place and time.
O - Occasional; occasionally, but usually not, present even in the right time
and place.
R - Rare; almost never present.
Acc - Accidental; seen only once.
Hyp - Hypothetical; not enough evidence to substantiate sighting. May or may
not occur here.
His - Historical; not seen in over 40 years. Arroyo cutting has turned the
canyon bottoms from pond and marshes to arid scrubland in the last 50 years.
