Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge

small state map showing location

Las Vegas, New Mexico

Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge is one of more than 500 refuges scattered across the United States. The refuge was established in 1965 and consists of 8,672 acres of marsh and water, native grasslands, cropland, timbered canyons and streams which provide habitat for a wide variety of plant and animal life. (NOTE: The presence and abundance of a number of species is predicated on there being water on the refuge.)

This list contains 271 species which have been observed on the refuge since 1966. Species are listed in accordance with the sixth edition (1983) A.O.U. checklist.

One group of birds, known as Neotropical migrants, are those species that nest in the United States or Canada, and spend the winter primarily south of our border in Mexico, Central or South America, or in the Caribbean. Many of them, including conspicuous or colorful hawks, hummingbirds, warblers, and orioles, and less colorful but no less important shorebirds, flycatchers, and thrushes, are experiencing population declines due to widespread loss of habitats important for their survival. Preservation of many different habitats for nesting, wintering, and migratory stopover sites is becoming vital for the survival of many of these birds. Those Neotropical migrants occuring on this refuge are identified with a "#".

* - nesting species
# - Neotropical migrant
Seasonal status and abundance are coded as follows:

Sp - March-May

u - uncommon: present, but not certain to be seen
o - occasional: seen only a few times during a season
r - rare: seen at intervals of 2 to 5 years
