Bird Checklists of the United States

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

Rio Hondo, Texas

Salt and freshwater marshes, coastal prairie, savannah and thorn brush attract a large variety of bird species to Laguna Atascosa NWR. Situated at the margin of the Gulf of Mexico and the desert Southwest and having mild winters further contribute to the number of bird species which may be seen here. One thing that makes Laguna special is that many of the birds within this 45,187 acre refuge are not found north of here.

HOW TO USE THIS CHECKLIST

Of the 369 species of birds which visit the refuge, 42 are accidental (including two subspecies of note), and 5 are exotic. Species of special interest are listed in capital letters. Another 39 hypotheticals are added to the end of this list. So, grab your bird book, binoculars and pencil, and as you spot birds check them off on this list. If you should find an accidental, hypothetical or unlisted bird please let us know - we're interested too.

This list is in accordance with the sixth edition (1983) A.O.U. check-list. Birds in south Texas do not always follow traditional seasonal migrations. Fall migration may start as early as July and winter birds may leave as soon as January, so keep this in mind while birding along our southern border!

* - species has nested on the refuge
Species of special interest are listed in capital letters.
& - exotic: introduced or escaped species
