VANCE AIR FORCE BASE
KEGELMAN AUXILIARY AIRFIELD

At the onset of WWII, land for a flying school was provided to the U.S. military by the city of Enid, Oklahoma. In 1949 it became Vance Air Force Base, now home to the 71st Flying Training Wing of the Air Education and Training Command. The joint specialized undergraduate pilot training program produces more than 200 Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and allied pilots each yeah flying T-37, T-38 and T-1 aircraft. Vance AFB's 1829 acres are 3 miles south of Enid.

Kegelman Auxiliary Airfield is located 45 miles west northwest of Vance AFB on the Osage Plains. The 1,066 acre site is bordered on the east by marginal flood plain and on the west by the Great Salt Plains State Park and Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge. These wetlands attract large numbers of landbirds as well as waterbirds to the area. Kegelman Airfield has mixed grass prairie sandhills with some wetlands and patches of relatively undisturbed habitat. This varied, protected habitat provides home for a good variety of plants and wildlife.

Current programs of the Natural Resources Manager include biological surveys to identify on-site wildlife, prescribed burns to maintain grasslands, and coordination with Rod and Gun Club activities. For information contact: Natural Resource Manager; (405) 213-6244.

AIR FORCE NATURAL RESOURCES

The United States Air Force has the responsibility of managing more than nine million acres of valuable public lands. To ensure success, the Air Force has developed a network of dedicated professionals who work in coordination with local, regional and national authorities. Their challenge is to find a balance in requirements for military mission, security and environmental habitat protection. This effort requires the cooperation and support of the Air Force and its neighbors. The primary goal is to guarantee the quality of public lands under Air Force stewardship.

Conservation programs on Air Force bases include fish and wildlife conservation, forestry, agricultural land lease, habitat management and outdoor recreation. Air Force Resource Managers and nearby communities, working together, have made great strides in fostering environmental awareness through education and cooperation.

The Air Force supports partnerships with many resource groups; Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation, Ducks Unlimited, North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Wetlands Protection and Enhancement and the National Watchable Wildlife program. You are invited to visit Air Force lands. Come see how we are doing with our part of America.

The Department of Defense and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation are cooperating on an international program to promote conservation of neotropical migratory birds. For information, call DoD at (703) 604-1773 or NFWF at (202) 857-0166.
