Davis-Monthan Air Force Base
Tucson, Arizona

Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona

In late 1927, Tucson had become the home of America's first municipal airport to be converted to a military base. Expanded as an operational bomber training base during WWII, it became Davis-Monthan Air Force Base during the cold war, again training pilots. Now 355th Wing is the host unit, training A-10 pilots, providing worldwide deployable combat-ready OA-10 forward-air-control support and EC-130 commands, control and communications countermeasures capability. Among the associate units are the 12th Air Force Headquarters, Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Center, and 305th Rescue Squadron. Supporting these efforts are 6,000 military and 1,700 civilian employees.

Davis-Monthan's 10,763 acres are within the city of Tucson, in a Sonaran desert basin surrounded by mountains. Nearly half the area is essentially native vegetation; Sonaran desertscrub, semi-desert Grassland and riparian. Atterbury Wash, providing woods, dense cover, foodplants and water, goes through the eastern sector of the base. These plant communities, plus urban plantings and airfield grasslands, provide habitat for a wide variety of birds and wildlife.

Environmental Quality Flight (CEV) promotes environmental stewardship through a proactive program of compliance, restoration, pollution prevention, natural and cultural resources management and environmental education. CEV participates in and urban raptor study with the University of Arizona and Arizona Game and Fish Department; Fledgling Cooper's and Swainson's Hawks are banded each spring. Heritage Park has a beautiful 1.5 mile nature trail. The Base Visitor's Center and BAMA Park also host good wildlife viewing areas. Military activities preclude access to Davis-Monthan AFB except by special permission. For information, contact CEV, 505-228-3215.

Air Force Resource Management

The United States Air Force has the responsibility of managing more than nine million acres of valuable public lands. To ensure success, the Air Force has developed a network of dedicated professionals who work in coordination with local, regional and national authorities. Their challenge is to find a balance in requirements for military mission, security and environmental habitat protection. This effort requires the cooperation and support of the Air Force and its neighbors. The primary goal is to guarantee the quality of public lands under Air Force stewardship.

Conservation programs on Air Force bases include fish and wildlife conservation, forestry, agricultural land lease, habitat management and outdoor recreation. Air Force Resource Managers and nearby communities, working together, have made great strides in fostering environmental awareness through education and cooperation.

The Air Force supports partnerships with many resource groups; Partners in Flight, Ducks Unlimited, North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Wetlands Protection and Enhancement and the National Watchable Wildlife program. You invited to visit Air Force lands. Come see how we are doing with our part of America.

The U.S. Air Force and Partners in Flight are cooperating on an international program to promote conservation of resident and Neotropical migratory birds. For information, visit http://www.dodpif.org or call Department of Defense Partners in Flight at 540-253-5675.
