BIRDING AT THE REFUGE

Each season brings a different combination of birds to the refuge. Summer birds include the much sought after Mexican species and hummingbirds. Winter brings sparrows, raptors and accidentals that stray off their migration route. Spring is filled with the sound and color of tiny songbirds, while fall migration brings waterfowl, sandpipers and others winging their way south. Seasons in this region may vary with elevation (3200'-4600').

WHERE TO START

330 species of birds have been sighted on the refuge. Here are a few places to begin your search.

Visitor center area: many of the specialty birds of SE Arizona are found right outside the visitor center, where masked bobwhite, canyon towhee, green-tailed towhee, Bendire's thrasher and Chihuahuan raven feast on the bushes and feeders.

Aguirre Lake: when summer rains have been plentiful, waterfowl, wading birds, grebes, sandpipers and many other birds not normally associated with arid areas are attracted to the 100 acre lake and 130 other smaller ponds found throughout the refuge.

Arivaca Creek: look for woodland species in tall cottonwoods and along the stream that attracts nesting gray hawks, ferruginous pygmy-owls, rose-throated becards, tropical kingbirds, vermilion flycatchers and yellow-billed cuckoo. A 2 mile trail follows the creek, then ascends to El Cerro at 4480'.

Arivaca Cienega: this marsh within the town of Arivaca has the widest diversity of birds found on the refuge. In addition to many of the same birds found at the creek, black-bellied whistling-ducks, grebes, herons, egrets and Virginia rails hide among the cattails and in the many small pools.

Pronghorn Drive: mesquite grasslands surrounding the auto tour route and entry road shelter a variety of sparrows, 3 types of quail, cactus wrens, curve-billed thrashers and most of the 19 types of hawks and falcons found on the refuge.
