Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range
Arizona

Barry M. Goldwater Range, Luke AFB, Arizona

The Barry M. Goldwater Range is the premier U.S. training range for aerial warfare tactics. Nearby Luke AFB is home for the 56th Fighter Wing, which trains aircrews in the F-16 Fighting Falcon. Located 70 miles southwest of Phoenix, the Goldwater Range provides 2.7 million acres for Air Force and Marine training. Air-to-ground gunnery targets comprise 40,000 acres, leaving over 90% of the range undisturbed. Desert wildlife coexists and prospers beneath the overhead aircraft activity. This results in one of the best examples of intact Sonaran desert.

Habitat consists of creosote-bursage flats, sand dunes, mixed cactus/paloverde uplands, riparian washes and 23 mountain ranges. Air Force Natural Resources personnel conduct biological surveys involving neotropical migrant birds, endangered bats, rare reptiles, and plants. Projects for raptor nest inventory and banding, and for owl surveys and nest box construction are ongoing.

Much of the BMGR is available, with proper authorization, for use by birders, campers, hunters and others. For access information, contact range operations at 520-683-6272 (East Mohawk Mtns.) or 520-341-3318 (West Mohawk Mtns.)

Air Force Resource Management

The United States Air Force has the responsibility of managing more than nine million acres of valuable public lands. To ensure success, the Air Force has developed a network of dedicated professionals who work in coordination with local, regional and national authorities. Their challenge is to find a balance in requirements for military mission, security and environmental habitat protection. This effort requires the cooperation and support of the Air Force and its neighbors. The primary goal is to guarantee the quality of public lands under Air Force stewardship.

Conservation programs on Air Force bases include fish and wildlife conservation, forestry, agricultural land lease, habitat management and outdoor recreation. Air Force Resource Managers and nearby communities, working together, have made great strides in fostering environmental awareness through education and cooperation.

The Air Force supports partnerships with many resource groups; Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation, Ducks Unlimited, North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Wetlands protection and Enhancement and the National Watchable Wildlife program. You are invited to visit Air Force lands. Come see how we are doing with our part of America.

The Department of Defense and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation are cooperating on an international program to promote conservation of neotropical migratory birds. For information call DoD Legacy Office at (703) 604-1773 or NFWF at (202)857-0166.
