Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
Office in St. George, Utah
The Arizona Strip is an isolated and, for the most part, still undeveloped area in Northern Arizona. Cut off from the rest of Arizona by the Grand Canyon and politically isolated from Utah by the state boundary, it has retained much of its wild character.
From the low desert ranges of the Grand Wash to the pine-covered slopes of Mt. Logan, the District is traversed by spectacular cliffs, rugged canyons and broad valleys. The diverse character of the area is reflected in its plant and animal life. Some species of animals are very restricted in the areas or in "habitats" they occupy. An example of this type of animal would be the Kaibab Squirrel which only lives in the Ponderosa Pine area. Other species such as the Coyote or Golden Eagle occupy a wide range of habitat. The key, then, to protecting and maintaining the 387 species of animals which occur on the Arizona Strip District is through managing their habitats.
There are approximately 2,737,000 acres of Public Land on the Arizona Strip which are managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) of the United States, Department of the Interior. The BLM is charged with the responsibility of managing the wildlife habitat which occurs on your Public Lands. This is no easy talk when one considers the needs of wildlife must be balanced with the other users of the Public Lands, such as livestock grazing, mining, woodland products and recreation use.
We hope this wildlife species list will increase your appreciation and enjoyment of the Arizona Strip and its wildlife. Please remember these Public Lands are yours to enjoy now and to preserve for the future.
Information for this species list was compiled by Wildlife Biologist of the Arizona Strip District of BLM from published literature, research contracts and field observations. The list was reviewed for accuracy by Dr. M. Riffey of Western Washington State College, Dr. A. Barnum of Dixie College and personnel of the Arizona Game and Fish Department. The list will be periodically updated so the reporting of any unusual sightings would be greatly appreciated.
Some of the best areas for observing a wide diversity of species are in the Paria Canyon, along the Virgin River and at Mt. Trumbull.
This list contains columns after each species that describes:
