Birds of the Walla Walla Area

small state map showing location

Walla Walla, Washington

The following list contains 266 species of birds observed in the general area bounded by the Columbia River on the west, the Blue Mountains on the east, Snake River on the north, and Weston, Oregon on the south. Most birders rely heavily on a 'field guide' to insure proper identification. This list is organized in the same order as most field guides.

Seasonal appearance and abundance are coded as follows:

Sp - Spring (March, May)
Su - Summer (June, August)
F - Fall (Sept., Nov.)
W - Winter (Dec., Feb.)

a - abundant = occurs in large numbers
c - common = occurs regularly in moderate numbers
u - uncommon = occurs regularly in small numbers
o - occasional = a few noted each year
r - rare = a few noted - not every year
x - accidental = out of normal range
