Birds of the Medford District

Medford, Oregon

The Medford District

The Bureau of Land Management's Medford District administers approximately 865,000 acres of public land in southwestern Oregon. Boundaries for the district include the south Umpqua River - Cow Creek divide to the north and the Oregon/California border to the south. the District's western boundary is generally the Coast Range and the eastern boundary is the Jackson/Klamath County line.

Managing wildlife and wildlife habitat which occurs on public land is one of the many important responsibilities of the BLM. This is an increasingly difficult task when one considers the needs of wildlife must be balanced with other uses of public lands such as timber harvesting, mining, grazing, recreation and preservation.

BLM resource personnel monitor nesting sites and other crucial habitat utilized by a variety of wildlife. Habitat improvement practices initiated by the Medford District include placement of artificial nest boxes, raptor perches, wildlife seedings, stream survey projects and wildflower/plant inventories.

We hope this checklist will increase your appreciation and enjoyment of the diverse bird species and habitat types found in BLM's southwest Oregon region. Good birding!

Using this Checklist

This checklist identifies birds found on BLM lands in the Medford District (see district boundaries). The list also includes birds found on portions of adjacent lands such as USDA Forest Service plus state and private lands.

Associating birds with their preferred habitat(s) is one of the quickest ways to learn about birds. This checklist has been arranged by associating each species with its most widely used habitat. In many cases, that habitat may be varied as the bird moves from its fall/winter feeding area to its spring/summer nesting grounds. Habitat is shown by the following abbreviations:

To further assist you in identifying which birds occupy preferred habitats during the course of a year, the checklist also shows residency for each species. Residency is shown by the following symbols placed next to species listed:

Beginning and advanced birdwatchers should note that many birds listed as Resident, Nesting or Wintering species have been recorded in the BLM Medford District and in other areas of southwestern Oregon, but are uncommonly seen. Additionally, some species listed are localized, historic sightings and are designated as "Accidental" in occurrence or frequency. A second symbol suggests the most likely time of year to discover an accidental species.

For those birdwatchers keeping a detailed record of their outing, a checkbox is positioned next to each species listed (___) and a black line for the date you were in the field is located in the upper lefthand corner of the following page.

Finally, an asterisk (*) has been placed next to those birds currently found in the Medford District which are on Oregon's threatened or endangered species list. All birds on this list, except for the European Starling and House Sparrow are protected by Oregon State and Federal law. For further information about the legal protection of birds, contact the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, P.O. Box 3503, Portland, OR 97208 or the U.S. Department of the Interior, Washington, D.C., 20240.

This checklist has been reviewed for accuracy by wildlife biologists of the BLM Medford District and Mr. O.D. Swisher, a longtime birdwatcher and member of the Rogue Valley Audubon Society. Vince Zauskey coordinated the design and layout. Cover illustration by Marie Carson.

The reporting of any bird species not listed would be gratefully appreciated. Mail sightings to: BLM, Attn: Medford District Biologist, 3040 Biddle Road, Medford, OR 97504. Please include location of your sighting, date and any other pertinent information.

Watchable Wildlife!

BLM in cooperation with the Defenders of Wildlife, is enhancing wildlife viewing opportunities through the development of the Watchable Wildlife Initiative. This initiative has provided detailed information to public land visitors to help them discover areas where different wildlife species are likely to be observed. For more information about watchable wildlife sites on the Medford District, contact us at the below address.
