McNary National Wildlife Refuge

Burbank, Washington

McNary National Wildlife Refuge is located in the Lower Columbia Basin of eastern Washington, adjacent to the confluence of the Columbia and Snake rivers near Pasco, Washington. The refuge is only 3,600 acres in size, but is an important resting and feeding area for migratory waterfowl in the Pacific Flyway. A variety of refuge habitats also provide important migration and nesting habitat for a rich diversity of other migratory birds.

The most favorable viewing opportunities for waterfowl occur between October and December. Freeze-up of impoundments in late December and January diverts many waterfowl to the open water of the Columbia and Snake rivers. Nesting activity commences from March through as late as July.

The following list contains 212 species of birds found on the refuge since 1955. Another six species are included as accidental occurrences. This list is in accordance with the Sixth Edition (1983) A.O.U. Checklist and its supplements. Species nesting locally are followed by an asterisk (*); those restricted to the refuge islands include a plus mark (+). Some 53 species were added to this list since the 1979 printing, thanks to the efforts and reports of local birding experts Robert Woodley, Mike Denny, and Tony Greagor.
