Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center
Newport, Oregon
This checklist is based entirely on actual observations, not on what birds are "believed to be" present. this list only includes birds seen alive in Lincoln County or from the shore of Lincoln County. It does NOT include birds seen at sea from boats or birds that have washed up on beaches.
This is a preliminary list; not all bird records have been compiled and analyzed. In this list, the common names of birds are given alphabetically to make it easier for beginners to find a bird species. Names of a few subspecies are given in parentheses.
The Status and Abundance classifications are approximations. With 332 species listed here for Lincoln County, it is not possible to smoothly "pigeon-hole" each species into a few simple categories.
To improve our records, readers are encouraged to send copies of their field notes of common as well as rare birds to:
Range Bayer Darrel Faxon
P.O. Box 1467 OR 1192 Thornton Cr. Road
Newport, OR 97365 Toledo, OR 97391.
PP = Persistently Present. In some species, the same individual birds
may be present throughout a year. But in other species, some or most birds
may be migratory. For example, loons, Brant, scaup, scoters, Black-bellied
Plovers, Whimbrels, Western Sandpipers, California and Ring-billed Gulls,
and Common Murres are listed as "PP" because some individuals can be found
throughout the year in many years even though most birds are migratory.
SR = Summer Resident. Birds arrive by June and are present continuously
in three or more months of the April-September period.
WR = Winter Resident. Birds arrive by December and are present continuously
in three or more months of the December-May period.
MI = Migrant. Birds are seen primarily only during spring (February-May)
and/or fall (late June-December) migration.
? = status is not clear or is unknown. There are more than 20 records
of this species, but these records are inadequate to determine the status
of this species.
VG = Vagrant. There are less than 20 records of this species in Lincoln
County.
Abundance (A):
C = common or abundant.
U = uncommon.
R = rare and may not be present every year.
APPROXIMATE Migration Dates:
First = First date (e.g., 5-12 = May 12th) that a species may be
seen in years when present.
Last = Last date (e.g., 10-25 = Oct. 25th) that a species may be seen
in years when present.
* = some birds of a species remain throughout the year, throughout
the summer, or throughout the winter but most arrive and depart on he First
or Last date given.
- = either there are too little data to determine a First or Last date or
the species appears to be nonmigratory.
